Digital X-rays use up to 80% less radiation than traditional film, deliver instant images, and allow zoom, contrast and precise measurements. They are essential in modern endodontics because they reveal accessory canals, root fractures, apical lesions and the exact canal length. The radiation dose from a periapical X-ray is comparable to a single day of natural ambient exposure.

What is digital X-ray?

It is an imaging system that replaces the traditional X-ray film with an electronic sensor connected to a computer. When the X-ray passes through your tooth, the sensor captures the digital image and sends it instantly to the office screen. In seconds, the endodontist sees the high-resolution image, magnifies it, adjusts the contrast, measures distances, and can detect details that an analog film simply did not show.

Is it safe?

Yes, very. The radiation dose of a modern digital dental X-ray is extremely low. To put it in perspective:

With a lead apron and thyroid collar (which we use as a routine), exposure is reduced even further and the procedure is safe even during pregnancy.

When are X-rays taken in endodontics?

In a complete root canal treatment, typically at least three X-rays are taken:

  1. Initial diagnostic X-ray: to view root anatomy and the problem requiring treatment.
  2. Working-length X-ray: to measure the exact length of each canal, confirming what the electronic locator indicates.
  3. Final obturation X-ray: to confirm that the seal is three-dimensional, hermetic, and reaches the apex.

In cases of complex anatomy or accessory canals, additional X-rays may be taken to obtain different angulations.

Why does this matter specifically in endodontics?

Endodontics works inside the tooth, in millimetric and sometimes sub-millimetric spaces. A high-resolution digital X-ray allows the endodontist to:

What if I bring X-rays from elsewhere?

If you bring digital or analog X-rays from another office or from the U.S., we can use them as an initial reference. However, for the treatment itself we always take our own updated images for two reasons: the situation may have changed and we need specific angles during the procedure.
