What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a biocompatible titanium post surgically inserted into the upper or lower jawbone to replace the root of a lost tooth. Once the implant has integrated with the bone (a process called osseointegration), a custom prosthetic crown is placed on top, replacing the visible tooth.
It's the most biomechanically natural solution: forces transmit directly to bone (like a natural root), neighboring teeth aren't compromised (unlike a fixed bridge), and the result is removable only by a professional.
When do you need a dental implant?
- Single missing tooth where you don't want to grind down neighboring teeth for a bridge.
- Several consecutive missing teeth when you want a fixed (non-removable) restoration.
- Full edentulism when you want an implant-retained overdenture (much more stable than a conventional full denture).
- A tooth that must be extracted and isn't recoverable with root canal or other conservative treatments.
Why El Salvador for dental implants?
Dental tourism for implants is particularly attractive because:
- Major savings. A complete US implant case ranges $3,000-$5,000 per tooth. In El Salvador it's a significant fraction of that — savings easily cover travel costs.
- Same materials. We use established implant systems (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, MIS, BioHorizons among others) — the exact same brands used in US clinics. The implant itself is not where you save by going to El Salvador; the savings are in clinical and lab labor.
- Digital planning. Computer-guided surgical planning when complexity requires it.
- USD pricing. El Salvador uses USD as legal tender. No exchange-rate surprises, no currency conversion fees.
- English-speaking team. Direct communication, treatment plans in English, follow-up via WhatsApp / iMessage / FaceTime once you're back home.
Our implant protocol
1. Evaluation + digital planning
Complete clinical exam, panoramic radiograph, and where required, 3D digital planning. We evaluate bone density, critical anatomical structures (maxillary sinus, inferior alveolar nerve), and design the exact position of the implant.
2. Placement surgery
Performed under local anesthesia. Typical duration: 45-60 minutes for a single implant. We access the bone, prepare the implant bed with stepped drills, and insert the titanium post. Closed with sutures.
3. Osseointegration period (3-6 months)
Your body "embraces" the titanium: bone cells deposit directly onto the implant surface, generating a permanent biological bond. During this period you live normally — in visible areas we can place a temporary crown so the gap isn't visible.
4. Abutment connection
Once integrated, the abutment (the piece connecting implant to crown) is attached. Minor procedure.
5. Final crown
Digital or traditional impressions are taken. The lab fabricates the crown in high-strength ceramic (zirconia, e.max or other depending on the case). Screwed or cemented onto the abutment.
6. Maintenance
Rigorous home hygiene + professional cleanings every 6 months + annual radiographic control. Implants are as susceptible to infection (peri-implantitis) as natural teeth are to periodontal disease.
The most important part of an implant isn't surgery day — it's the prior planning and the subsequent maintenance. A well-planned, well-maintained implant lasts a lifetime. — Dra. Stefany Colato
Dental tourism logistics for implants
For US-based patients planning implant treatment in El Salvador:
- Trip 1 — Surgery: Evaluation + planning + implant placement. Typically 2-4 days on-site. After surgery you return home; osseointegration happens naturally over 3-6 months.
- Remote monitoring: Periodic photos / radiographs from your local dentist if needed, shared with us via WhatsApp.
- Trip 2 — Crown placement: 3-6 months later. Impression + final crown. Typically 1-2 days on-site.
- Local follow-up: Annual radiographic check, can be done in coordination with your US dentist.
If you're getting multiple implants, the schedule can be optimized to maximize what's done per trip. Send us your case for a specific timeline.
Types of implant solutions
- Single implant: 1 implant + 1 crown to replace 1 tooth.
- Implant bridge: 2 implants supporting 3-4 connected crowns. Useful for replacing several consecutive teeth.
- Implant-retained overdenture: 2-4 implants retaining a removable prosthesis. Vastly more stable than a conventional full denture.
- Full-arch fixed bridge (All-on-4 / All-on-6): 4-6 implants per arch supporting a fixed prosthesis. The most complete solution for full edentulism.
How much do dental implants cost in El Salvador?
Implant cost includes several components:
- The implant (titanium post).
- The abutment.
- The prosthetic crown.
- All clinical controls throughout treatment.
- Additional procedures if needed: bone graft, sinus lift, tissue regeneration.

What patients often ask us
How long does the full dental implant treatment take?
The complete treatment typically takes 3 to 6 months. It includes implant placement surgery, the osseointegration period (when bone fuses with titanium), and final crown placement.
For dental tourism patients, the surgery happens during one visit and the final crown during a second visit a few months later.
Does the implant surgery hurt?
No during the surgery — it's performed under effective local anesthesia. Single-implant surgery is comparable in discomfort to a tooth extraction.
Post-op is well controlled with common painkillers and most patients return to normal activity the next day.
Am I a candidate for implants?
Most adults in good health are candidates. Basic requirements:
- Sufficient bone (if not, prior bone graft)
- Healthy gums
- Not smoking during healing (greatly improves success rates)
Conditions like poorly-controlled diabetes, bisphosphonate therapy, or maxillofacial radiotherapy require special evaluation.
How much does a dental implant cost in El Salvador vs the US?
Dental implants in El Salvador typically cost 50-70% less than in the United States. A complete US implant case (implant + abutment + crown) ranges $3,000-$5,000; in El Salvador it's a significant fraction of that.
Contact us via WhatsApp with a panoramic X-ray if you have one for a personalized quote.
How long do dental implants last?
With good hygiene and periodic check-ups, implants can last 20-30 years or more. The crown on top may need replacement every 10-15 years due to wear, but the titanium implant itself is designed to be permanent.
