What is a smile design?
Smile design — also called Digital Smile Design (DSD) — is a dental protocol that plans the aesthetic result first and then executes the treatments needed to reach it. It's the opposite of the traditional approach, where isolated treatments were done and hoping the whole looked right.
The plan combines facial analysis — symmetry, midline, proportions, lip position — with dental analysis: color, shape, position and relative size of each tooth. The goal isn't a generic mold, but a smile that harmonizes with your face.
Who is a smile design for?
It's a good option when one or more of these apply:
- Color: stains or discoloration that don't respond to whitening (internal staining, antibiotic marks, fluorosis).
- Shape: worn, chipped or irregularly shaped teeth.
- Spaces: diastemas — gaps between teeth — or widths that don't harmonize.

Planning your dental trip
For US-based patients, a full smile design usually takes 2 trips:

Veneers, whitening or orthodontics: which do you need?
Each technique solves a different problem — and combining them is common:
- Whitening: improves color when teeth are well-positioned but yellowed. The least invasive.
- Orthodontics (brackets or aligners): improves position — gaps, crowding, bite. Doesn't change color or shape.
- Porcelain veneers: improve shape, color and small position corrections at once. Require minimal enamel removal (0.3–0.5 mm) — a permanent commitment.
- Composite veneers: a more conservative and economical alternative, but less durable. Useful for minor corrections.
Most complete designs combine whitening + orthodontics (if needed) + veneers on the front teeth to finish the result.
How long does a smile design take?
It depends on the scope of the plan — these are the typical ranges:
- Whitening only: 2–4 weeks.
- Whitening + anterior veneers: 1–2 months.
- Full case with prior orthodontics: 8–18 months of orthodontics + 1–2 months of final aesthetic phase.
- Major reconstruction: 3–6 months depending on scope.
