What is a smile design?

Smile design (Digital Smile Design or DSD) is a dental protocol that plans the aesthetic result first and then executes the treatments needed to achieve it. It's the opposite of the traditional approach, where isolated treatments were done and the overall look was a hope.

It combines:

• Facial analysis: symmetry, midline, proportions, lip position.
• Dental analysis: color, shape, position, relative size of each tooth.
• Digital planning: modeling the new design over high-resolution photos.
• Mock-up: physical preview of the design on your own teeth before any irreversible change.

Why El Salvador for smile design?

The design process

1. Initial aesthetic consultation

Conversation about what you like and dislike about your current smile. Standardized clinical photos (smile, retracted, profile), basic facial analysis. We don't take models yet — first we understand what you want.

2. Digital planning

Over your photos we digitally design the new look: adjusting shape, color, position and size of each tooth. We show you a digital "before/after" to develop realistic expectations.

3. Physical mock-up

The key step. We bring the digital design into your mouth via a temporary material: placed over your teeth (without grinding anything) simulating the final result. You look in the mirror, take photos, talk, smile. You approve or request adjustments before any irreversible treatment starts.

4. Execution of the plan

Once approved, treatments are executed to reach the design: whitening, orthodontics if position needs correcting, veneers for final shape and color, occlusal adjustments. Each step planned with the approved design as reference.

5. Maintenance

Rigorous hygiene + periodic check-ups + night guard if bruxism is present. Quality ceramic veneers last 10-20 years with good care.

Smile design for dental tourism

For US-based patients, smile design typically requires 2 trips:

1. Trip 1 — Planning + start: Consultation, photos, digital design, mock-up, approval. Whitening can start during this trip. Approximately 3-5 days on-site.
2. Trip 2 — Final delivery: 2-4 weeks later. Veneer preparation, lab time, final cementation. Approximately 5-7 days on-site to allow lab fabrication and try-in adjustments.

If orthodontics is needed previously, the schedule is longer — typically a remote-monitored Invisalign treatment can be coordinated with your local dentist for the active phase, with final adjustments in El Salvador.

Veneers, whitening or orthodontics: which do you need?

Each technique solves a different problem. Combining them is common:

• Whitening: improves color when teeth are well-positioned and shaped but yellowed. Least invasive aesthetic treatment. Reversible if not maintained.
• Orthodontics (brackets or aligners): improves position — diastemas, crowding, bite. Doesn't change color or shape. Conservative because nothing is ground.
• Porcelain veneers: improve shape, color and small position corrections simultaneously. Require minimal enamel removal (0.3-0.5 mm) — a permanent commitment.
• Composite veneers: more conservative and economical alternative, but less durable. Useful for minor corrections.

How much does smile design cost?

Cost varies considerably by scope:

• Whitening alone is most economical.
• Anterior veneers (6-8 units) represents most of the cost when applicable.
• Prior orthodontics, when needed, adds its own cost.
• Materials: composite is more economical, ceramic is the durable investment.
