From August 1 to 6, El Salvador stops to celebrate the Divine Savior of the World, the country's patron saint. The Fiestas Agostinas are the largest religious and cultural celebration in the country: the Bajada, processions, fairs, family gatherings and a display of traditional food without equal. For Salvadorans abroad who return for these dates, they are days of deep reconnection with family, faith and the flavors of home.
Festival food and your teeth
The Fiestas concentrate the Salvadoran culinary classics at maximum intensity:
- Atol chuco, atol de elote, atol de piña: corn-based drinks with abundant sugar.
- Enchiladas, pastelitos, empanadas: fried and sweet in every variant.
- Minutas, cotton candy, candied apples: pure concentrated sugar.
- Nuégados and buñuelos: fried dough bathed in panela syrup.
- Pupusas in industrial quantities (less problematic except for melted cheese and acidic salsa).
- Horchata, ensalada, chicha, tamarind drink: fresh drinks with high sugar content.
- Elotes locos and fried yuca: carbohydrates that turn into simple sugars.
What accumulates in a week of celebration
One day of excess is manageable. Five or six consecutive days produce a real cumulative effect: progressive enamel demineralization, acceleration of incipient cavities, gingivitis from accumulated plaque, activation of pain in teeth with weakened restorations, and risk of fracture when biting hard foods.
Check-up before or after the Fiestas?
Before (July): identifies and resolves weaknesses before the sugar festival. Recommended if you have a history of frequent problems.
After (mid-August): evaluates the real post-fiesta state. Ideal if you live abroad and want to take advantage of the visit.
Ideal: both if your dental history is extensive.
The minimum routine during the Fiestas
- Brushing twice a day — even on holidays, even after a late night.
- Nighttime flossing: removes what empanadas and nuégados leave trapped.
- Water between every sweet snack: non-negotiable.
- Xylitol gum when no toothbrush is available.
- Concentrate sweets at specific moments instead of nibbling 12 hours straight.
For those traveling from the U.S.
If you're coming back for the Agostinas, schedule 2-3 weeks in advance: professional cleaning, pending treatments you postponed because of cost, whitening for family photos, or an endodontic evaluation of that tooth that "feels weird."
The deeper meaning of caring for yourself
The Fiestas Agostinas celebrate identity, faith and community. The Divine Savior reminds us that life is a gift worth caring for — and that includes the body we live in. Caring for your smile doesn't contradict the celebration; it's part of honoring what you have.
Celebrate with health
