The dental implant process, from evaluation to crown

Dental implant with crown beside a natural tooth in a cutaway of bone and gum

An implant can replace a missing tooth when indicated. This article explains evaluation, possible grafting, healing, and the stages leading to crown placement.

If the tooth is still present, we first assess whether it can be preserved. If it is already missing, replacement options are evaluated according to oral health and your needs.

How Long Does the Process Take?

  1. Evaluation ($35 with a digital periapical X-ray): examination and review of necessary studies. A 2D image alone does not determine bone volume; if a CT scan is needed, referral is made to an imaging center.
  2. Implant placement: a procedure with anesthesia; duration, discomfort, and recovery vary by case. Follow care and activity instructions.
  3. Integration: may require several months. Follow-up determines when to proceed and which care instructions to maintain.
  4. Abutment and definitive crown: planned when assessment supports proceeding; try-ins and adjustments may be needed.

If traveling from abroad, ask before booking. More than one trip may be needed; visits and intervals depend on healing, additional procedures, and follow-up.

Implant, or save the tooth?

If the tooth is still present, first assess whether it can be preserved. Initial root canal treatment costs $390 and retreatment is quoted individually. If a tooth is missing or cannot be preserved, replacement options are discussed. Read more: root canal · retreatment · Root canal or extraction?

When is a bone graft needed?

Bone amount and quality are assessed alongside gums and medical history. A periapical X-ray provides information, but a CT scan at an imaging center may be needed. If a graft is indicated, cost and timing are explained before starting.

Implant, bridge or removable denture?

  • Dental implant from $999 with abutment and zirconia crown: can replace a tooth without using neighboring teeth as supports, when indicated.
  • Fixed bridge: $300 per unit. Design, supports, and unit count are determined at evaluation; the unit count does not always equal the number of missing teeth.
  • Removable denture: $300 per unit. Design, unit count, fit, and quote are determined individually.

At the evaluation we explain which one suits your case, depending on how many teeth are missing, how much bone there is and your budget.

How long does a dental implant last?

An implant may function for many years, but its lifespan is not guaranteed. Hygiene, follow-up, smoking, and gum health matter. The crown may also need adjustment or replacement; seek advice about mobility, pain, or bleeding.
